all they are is dust in the wind...

I'll have more later, I am just in a mood and wanted to post this song. you probably all know it...

Dust In the Wind (Kansas)

I close my eyes,
Only for a moment and the moment's gone
All my dreams
Pass before my eyes, a curiosity

Dust in the wind, all they are is dust in the wind

Same old song,
Just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do
Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see

Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind

Don't hang on,
Nothing last forever but the earth and sky
It slips away,
And all your money won't another minute buy

Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind, everything is dust in the wind

does anyone know if there's a story behind this song? considering I am the stupid northern girl that watched Lynyrd Skynyrd play Free Bird live last year and didn't know it had any significance, I figured I'd ask. anyway, I don't know why Dust In the Wind, but there's just something about it that fit my mood tonight. what an absolutely amazing song.

Don't know the story behind it per se, but it always strikes me the same was as Pete Seeger's "Turn Turn Turn," which is from Ecclesiastes.

from Ecclesiastes? interesting. is that the verse about from dust we came and to dust we will return or something like that or is this something different? now I'm gonna have to look it up...

I think "ashes to ashes, dust to dust" comes from the Book of Common Prayer. The lyric to "Turn Turn Turn" is directly inspired from Ecclesiastes. In my mind, "Dust in the Wind" and "Turn Turn Turn" blur together. I know it's not the same exact message, but I get the same sense if transient nature of man in them both. I don't remember if Ecclesiastes talked about the temporary nature of man's influence on things; it's been too long since I've read it.

But I like both songs. They're very unlikely hit records about philosophy, considering they're two tiny islands in a vast ocean of love songs.

I think you're onto something. Ecclesiastes 3:20 says " All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return." I'd say it's close enough. still a great song either way.
